It’s only Day One of Web Summit and there’s been that may highlights I almost don’t know where to start.

Here are my top five picks of what went on in the RDS today. Make sure to keep an eye on your mails so you’ll know what not to miss tomorrow.

David Marcus – VP Messenger – Facebook


David is leading messaging products at Facebook: “The messaging era is definitely now,” as he’s said. He gave us the inside track on how Facebook is reinventing the marketing paradigm over on Marketing Stage: “We want to reinvent communications for billions of people,” as he put it.

Edwin van der Sar – CMO – Ajax


One of the greatest ‘keepers to ever play football, Edwin is now Chief Marketing Officer at Ajax. During his talk on Sport Stage, he paid tribute to current Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: “I’m sure with the results he had at Bayern Munich and Barcelona, he’s the guy who can bring United back to the success we had while I was at the club,” he said.

If you’re a dog person – I am, shouts out to my dogs Alfie and Bo – I hope you caught Whistle, one of our START startups. They’re helping dogs live longer, healthier and happier lives and have built what’s been described as the “Fitbit for dogs”.

Tia Kansara – Director – Kansara Hackney


Tia got proceedings underway on Machine Stage, giving the opening remarks before joining a conversation with City of Palo Alto Chief Information Officer Jonathan Reichental. A specialist consultant on smart cities, Tia and Jonathan talked about just how smart a city can be.

Mike Krieger – Co-Founder – Instagram


Mike told us his vision for the network’s future on Centre Stage. During his talk he told us that 75 percent of photographs taken today are snapped on smartphones.

Cyberpsychologist and CSI: Cyber producer Mary Aiken hit Society Stage to talk about how are we building our individual self when so much of our identity is curated and projected on to social platforms.


Oculus VR’s Founder Palmer Luckey was looking fresh to death for his Centre Stage talk on bringing VR to the masses.


Coderddojo CEO Mary Moloney spoke at our free Schools Night.


As did charity: water Founder Scott Harrison.
