The Fastest Field Sport in the World at Web Summit

Dublin in November. The sun won’t be there, but will you?

Sport Summit 2015 is bringing together the best players, coaches & decision makers in the game, with those creating the technology that will define the next generation of sport. When browsing our speaker list you’ll recognise a lot of the names, brand, organisations and sports. One that may not be so recognisable is Joe Canning – Galway Hurler.

Joe is one of the best, if not best players in the fastest field sport in the world. A game that sees players play in front of 80,000 people on a Sunday afternoon and then go to work on their day jobs the next morning.

What is Hurling?

In short hurling is played with sticks, a ball (sliotar), a goal and 30 people. The aim, as with most sports is to score more than the opposition. A goal (under the crossbar) is worth 3 points, a point (over the crossbar) is surprisingly worth a point. I’ll let this video explain – it’s the last 10 minutes of this year’s All Ireland semi-final between Galway & Tipperary. Joe is wearing number 14 for Galway who are in maroon:

Who is Joe Canning?

Among the best hurlers ever to play the game, and still only 26! Joe plays for Galway & Portumna. His best position is full forward, where a lot of the scoring is done, and he is also a free-taker and master of the sideline cut (a very particular hurling skill). Here’s a goal Joe scored earlier this year while falling over and facing away from goal, no biggie.

Where can you see him?

Joe will be speaking at Sport Summit at Web Summit – he’ll be joined by the likes of Chris Froome, Edwin van der Sar, Jed York, Ian Ayre & Tiki Barber. Find out more about Sport Summit here.
